Just what is incontinence?

Definition incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine that is enough to cause concern, either from a social or hygiene perspective.

It is estimated that over 12 million Americans have urinary incontinence. Incontinence affects all ages, both sexes, and people of every social and economic level. It is also estimated that 15 to 30 percent of people over the age of 60 who live at home have incontinence. Women are twice as likely as men to have this condition. In addition, at least half of the 1.5 million Americans who reside in nursing homes are incontinent. The exact number of people with incontinence is not known, but the total number of people affected may be far greater than current estimates.People are often embarrassed to approach their GP with continence problems and they can affect every area of life.

It is more common than you might think. an estimated that over 12 million people in the US - with at least 16 percent of women experiencing incontinence to some degree by the age of 75. It is about twice as common in women than men, and affects many women after childbirth.

It is not a condition confined to the elderly, as many younger people have problems with continence, for a number of reasons.

The main types of urinary incontinence are Stress Incontinence and Urge Incontinence.
