There are a number of tricks for reducing incontinence |
Prevention is better than cure. - Regular pelvic floor exercises to strengthen these important muscles. This is particularly important in pregnancy, after childbirth or surgery to the area.
- HRT may be advised for post-menopausal women who are vulnerable to continence problems.
- Avoid heavy lifting which can damage the pelvic floor muscles
- Avoid smoking. People who smoke are more likely to suffer from urge incontinence.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks which can irritate the bladder.
- Do not cut down the amount of water you drink. This just makes urine more concentrated and more likely to irritate the bladder or result in a urinary tract infection.
- Try restricting your fluid intake only in the last two to three hours before you go to bed.
- Eat a balanced diet to prevent constipation.
- Take regular exercise.
