What is overflow incontinence? |
This happens when the bladder is filled so much that it simply cannot hold any more urine. Also called ‘incomplete bladder emptying’, it is common in older men who have an enlarged prostate gland. The prostate gland is located around the urethra and if enlarged can put pressure on it, which causes inefficient emptying of the bladder. Urine remains in the bladder and can occasionally trickle out as leakage.
Other causes of overflow incontinence are an obstruction in the urinary tract, or damage to the nerves that supply the bladder.
Overflow incontinence is rare in women.
