This is the most common type of incontinence and occurs when a small amount of urine leaks out when the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles are put under pressure. This could be when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh, lift something heavy, or do some physical exercise, including sex. It could be because the pelvic floor muscles are not strong enough, or that the urethra has prolapsed (moved out of it’s normal position). More women than men suffer from stress incontinence and it can be brought on by childbirth, hysterectomy or the menopause.
Usually only a small amount of urine leaks out but it can be very inconvenient and embarrassing.
