What is urge incontinence? |
The second most common type of incontinence, this is when the sufferer experiences an urge to pass small amounts of urine frequently. It might also be referred to as an unstable bladder, or an overactive bladder. The muscle in the wall of the bladder, the detrusor, contracts involuntarily which leads to a loss of bladder control and the evacuation of urine. The bladder may tell the brain that it is full before it is.
Sometimes this form of incontinence can be caused by a bladder or urinary tract infection, in which case it is experienced only temporarily. Diabetes can interfere with the normal process of urine production and can result in difficulty of this nature.
Urge incontinence can happen at any time, even when you are completely inactive, though it is often triggered by a change of position, when you are stressed, or while having sex. People with this type of incontinence often have to visit the toilet several times a night.
