Treatment for Urge Incontinence
As with stress incontinence drinking
less fluid will not help your
continence problems. Amongst other
things the concentration of the little
urine that is produced can increase the
chances of bladder irritation and
leakage.
Alcohol, caffeine based drinks and
smoking should be avoided as caffeine
and nicotine are irritants as
well.
Avoid constipation –
drink plenty and eat a healthy, well
balanced diet.
Pads and Clothing
Managing your
continence problems effectively can
minimise the impact they have on your
life. A wide range of absorbent pads
and towels are available to lessen the
embarrassment of leaks. Products are
available from pharmacies or your
continence advisor.
Wearing appropriate easy to manage
clothing will make life easier.
You may consider planning the location
of toilets when you go out and having a
commode or portable toilet in your
bedroom for night time use.
Antibiotics
If a bladder or
urinary tract infection is the cause of
your problems antibiotics may clear it
up.
Bladder Training
Techniques
This is when you retrain
your bladder over time to hold more
urine. (this also helps with an
overactive bladder). With the help of
your doctor, or continence advisor you
gradually stretch the bladder and
lengthen the time between trips to the
toilet to empty it.
Drug Therapy
Drugs may be
prescribed which relax the bladder by
blocking some of the nerve
impulses.
Electric Nerve
Stimulators
These are sometimes
used in the treatment of Urge
Incontinence.
